Greening building, challenge for the city of tomorrow

France has become over the 10 last years one of the first nations with more than one million m2 per year in terms of extensive and semi-intensive greening.
In the same time the greening of façades (plant walls) has aroused an undeniable interest.

Responding to legitimate societal expectations (nature, wellness in cities, sustainable development) market growth is affirmed based on the creativity of architects, town planners and landscapers, know-how of companies in the construction and landscaping industry. Theses dynamics are accompanied and supported by research programs all around the world, working to understand the phenomena, the development of processes and systems able to meet the expectations of customer (stormwater management, climate city and summer comfort, biodiversity, etc.).


Green towns set off great hopes 

The issue needs to be addressed, from an ecosystem level up to the concept of Eco-cities: in terms of analysis from all scientific disciplines, in terms of industrial and commercial strategies, and in terms of regulatory policy and governance. The purpose of the program for WGIC2013 Congress is to work on different levels: on a level of the building itself, its supporting structure (roofs or walls) and its components, even on the level of the particle and the cell for the study of physico-chemical and biological phenomena.

Rich in high value science and technology communications, the program will benefit of the international dimension of the Congress. It will be resolutely inter-disciplinary based on transversal communications and on practical approaches giving full scope for debate, exchange of practices and  experience.

Impacts & Effects

The greening buildings and especially greenroofs are presented as being able to satisfy several criteria about environment and comfort. What are  the recent researchs on performance and impacts? What are the real performances in terms of water management, of stormwater management, thermal,  city climate, acoustic comfort, remediation and biodiversity? What does greening of buildings contribute in terms of welfare and comfort of citizens?


Environmental and human issues

Among the ecological, environmental and human stakes that the sustainable city of tomorrow needs to raise, biodiversity is obviously the major issue. How do we prepare ecological spaces in urban and suburban areas to preserve and promote biodiversity? What is the ecology of thecity? What is the contribution of greening assembly in this area? What are the constraints and limits? How do we push them back? Is the greening of buildings  an answer to urban densification?

How an to what extent doesgreening contribute to the creation, development, sustainability of our heritage and its identity?
Is the greening of  buildings a factor of social cohesion and howis it expressed? To what extent  are greeen roofs  part of the social policy of the city?



What are the measurement methods? What are the results in micro and macroeconomic How do you calculate the return on investment?  How long does it take?

How to optimize the intervention of different actors in terms of contractual relations and project management?

What is the impact of the building sectors (architect, urban planner, economist and companies), and vegetable sectors (producer, developer contractor)? Is greening of buildings a source of new jobs in the long term? Under what conditions?

How far can the installation of vegetables on roofs can play a role in providing agricultural supplies to population (urban agriculture), in the creation of a new type of short production cycle? Is it an economic function or first a social function?


Landscapes and urban policy

In the city but also in rural areas, greening of building is present in many architectural and town planning projects, in response  to strict environmental criteria and expectations of a more comfortable life. Related to the physical and mental health of citizens, technical management ofbuildings, neighborhoods and cities, it is at the heart of political projects leading to the development of genuine urban ecological engineering.

What objectives are pursued in development projects that incorporate greening? What is the process in terms of planning in the eco-neighborhoods, for example? What are the selection and decision-making criteria? What role can greening play in renovation/rehabilitation of buildings and neighborhoods?

How does the management of water quantity and quality take account of the greening of buildings? How do we measure the effectiveness of policy decisions and over what period should we evaluate it?

What are the incentive policies to implement on the different territorial levels to develop urban greening  in general? On which regulatory tools should we rely on  to support them, how should they evolve? What are the lessons of best practices in cities? Which tools are necessary  for their implementation?



The greening of buildings is a rich ancestral practice in a certain number of countries. Issues and practices have evolved. The technical innovations are nowadays the motors of development in greening building, providing answers to expectations in very different geographical areas, and answer to technical, regulatory and economics contraints. What have we learnt from the past and recent achievements in terms of technology? What  problems still need to be solved? What innovative practices can we share?


Regulation, standardization and labeling

Regulations, standards, certification tools are guarantees in terms of quality, indispensable tools of project management of policy tools development. What have we learnt from a comparative analysis of different regulatory policies in Europe in particular? What changes can we expectin particular in favor of European harmonization? How to reconcile innovation with regulation?


Training and skills

Skills are the heart of the successful of greening of building sites and the key to longevity. Today, several trades are very likely going to work together to occur under the direction of the supervisor. What combinaison of skills should we require to ensure the success of projects?What are the specific skills necessary  for greening of building ? What type of curriculum should be implemented and  which partners should be involved for training and education? What levels are required in terms of initial training and additionnal profesionnal training?
